The fourth graders at St. John Paul II Catholic School gathered in the multipurpose building for their celebratory Assembly at the end of the Pet Responsibility Program. The event was hosted by PRC teacher, Christie Hartlove. They were joined by three very special guests – the PRC mascot, Speuter, Ms Randy Jane and her therapy miniature horse, Victor! Prior to the assembly, Randy explained that, during an assembly, the students at another school were over-excited about meeting Victor and she thought maybe this time she should wait outside and bring him in at the end. Christie assured Randy that the students at SJP are respectful and kind and they would remain calm while Victor visited. While you could hear the students’ audible “oohhhh” as Victor entered the building, they were able to contain their excitement with wonderful manners. Ms Randy explained to the students how Victor visits senior citizens in nursing homes, reminding them of the horses they have known and loved in their lives and bringing them comfort. Victor is a very special horse and behaves like a perfect little gentleman indoors …. even though he does have his moments when he is at home! Ms Randy described how she cares for Victor and how much time she devotes to him. He brings a lot of love and pleasure to her and the people she visits. As with all pets, it is important for Victor to know he is loved and to have his play time. The fourth graders who wrote entries for the Speuter Story Contest proved their love by speaking up for those who have no voice. Alexis was announced as the winner and received a framed certificate from Speuter. Alexis has a beautiful 5 month old female German Shepherd named Shadow. During one of the lessons, Alexis told Christie that she shared what she learned with her parents about the importance of getting Shadow spayed and she was so hopeful that her story would be chosen. Both parents attended the assembly and were excited that Alexis was chosen as our winner.
Congratulations to all the St. John Paul II fourth graders for being part of the team that makes life better for all pets!
