SANDHILLS FARM LIFE 2023-2024

The 4th grade students at Sandhills Farm Life met together in the Media Center on Monday, March 11, to show what they had learned during the 5 weeks of Pet Responsibility lessons. Several parents attended, as well as Principal Julie MacPherson and Guidance Counselor Rebecca Tyson. PRC volunteer Cindy Gansen emcee’d the closing ceremony!

PRC volunteer Liz Surface encouraged the students to show their knowledge of the five “I Can” statements and they earned a surprise gift for answering correctly.

PRC’s Kitty mascot, Speuter, also attended and read a poem describing her life as an abandoned kitten, and then being rescued by a kind boy and his father.

Students listened to PRC volunteer & dog trainer Kathy Pellerino tell Nikko’s story of being a very sick young puppy and Kathy’s efforts to save his life. Nikko has become a well-trained Therapy Dog, and also does agility and tricks. Nikko demonstrated some of his tricks to the delight of the students!

With the help of SFL Art teacher, Ms. Vaccaro, students drew illustrations on plain white paper bags, showing ways of how to be a responsible pet owner. These bags were presented to the Spay Neuter Veterinary Clinic (in Vass), to dispense necessary pet meds and post-surgery instructions to pet owners for their pets. Winners of the Star Artist Awards for outstanding bags were Charlotte K., Kinsie K., Elizabeth M., Elenora C., Harper D., Maddie M., Emily A., Marlee M., Luke H., Emma E., Natalie S., Jersie P., Makenna G., and Evelyn G. Winning bags are shown in the slide show below.

Students participated in a Speuter Story Contest. Winners were Briley M., who wrote and illustrated an imaginative story about a family of 5 feral cats; Taylor F., with her informative story of why to spay & neuter to help Moore County; Emma B.’s award will be used for a friend’s dog, and Fiona D.’s award will be used for her dog Holly. Congratulations to the winners for taking the time to advocate for pets!!

The words of the Promise Poster were read and students responded with “I Promise”, signifying their commitment to being Advocates for all animals. The poster was signed by the students and will be displayed in the Sandhills Farm Life School.

Congratulations to the Sandhills Farm Life 4th graders, who will work to make life better for the pets in Moore County!!
