The Pet Care Teams finish 2021 with 3 more Pet Care Days!
To avoid having pets in cars during the hot months, the Pet Care Teams took a break from hosting Pet Care Days and spent the summer planning events for the fall. Three events were held in the fall, bringing the total number of events from December 2020 to November 2021 to seven. The final three events were held in Robbins, at the Robbins Elementary School, in Pinebluff, at Ives Memorial Baptist Church, and in Taylortown, at the Johnny Boler Municipal Park. It is heartwarming to study the statistics: 400 pets were seen across the seven events. 394 received rabies shots (209 of those had not been vaccinated before), 205 took advantage of subsidized veterinary examinations given by Dr. Baker, 130 received Parvo/Distemper vaccinations, 34 cats received the FVRCP vaccine and 201 pets received a month’s worth of flea and tick medication. Most importantly, we were able to encourage pet owners to have their pets spayed or neutered and to help them with the paperwork to access free or reduced-cost procedures. Conservatively, we facilitated or aided in having over 100 pets spayed or neutered as a result of these events. There were a lot of very appreciative pet owners, thrilled to be able to care for the pets that bring them so much joy and love. Robbins Pet Care Day, June 12, 2021
Following the overwhelming attendance at the March Pet Care Day, the PRC team built on the experience gained and, with some generous donations, expanded the services offered at an event in Robbins on June 12th, 2021. The PRC Prevention Program Coordinator, Sarah Monzillo, researched a new location capable of handling the attendance and found the ideal location – Robbins Elementary School. With the permission of Moore County Schools, the team forged ahead. Expanding considerably on the services offered at the prior event, thanks to the Banfield Foundation, the PRC was able to offer free rabies and parvo/distemper vaccinations. A local veterinarian and her team offered complete physical exams and additional vaccinations at a reduced cost. Additionally, at this event, for each pet that was examined, the PRC donated a topical application of flea and tick medication to last one month. The veterinary technicians showed the pet owners the correct way to apply the medication. Dr Janice Baker and her team from the Veterinary Tactical Group (VTG), a mobile veterinary practice out of Aberdeen, once again enthusiastically teamed with the PRC for the event. With limited access to veterinary services in the Robbins area, the event was a huge success. The event was scheduled from 9am to noon. 137 pets were seen during this time as well as some owners stopping by solely for free pet food. 120 rabies shots were administered. 50 examinations were given by Dr. Baker and 27 parvo/distemper and 8 FVRCP vaccinations were administered. Pet owners were able to discuss their pets’ health concerns with the veterinarian and veterinary technicians. They were also able to talk with PRC and Sandhills Spay Neuter Veterinary Clinic representatives about the availability of spay and neuter services and sign up for a future appointment or transport from the Robbins area. As each pet owner left the event, they were given pet food and additional information. The children received coloring books about staying safe around pets. The rabies and parvo/distemper vaccinations were generously donated by the Banfield Foundation. The flea and tick medications were made possible by a grant from Walmart to The Pet Responsibility Committee (PRC). The local Aberdeen Walmart supported the grant application. The other discounted services were generously supplied by Dr Baker and VTG (Veterinary Tactical Group). The pet food was donated by the Walmart Distribution Center in Pageland, SC. Free and discounted spay/neuter services are provided to qualified residents through subsidies from the County of Moore.

Robbins Pet Care Day, March 27, 2021
The PRC built on the experience gained at last year’s event and expanded the services offered at an event in Robbins on March 27th, 2021. As at the prior event, the PRC subsidized rabies vaccinations and teamed with a veterinarian who offered complete physical exams and additional vaccinations at a reduced cost. Additionally, at this event, for each pet that was examined, the PRC donated a topical application of flea and tick medication to last one month. The veterinary technicians showed the pet owners the correct way to apply the medication. Dr Janice Baker and her team from the Veterinary Tactical Group (VTG), a mobile veterinary practice out of Vass, once again enthusiastically teamed with the PRC for the events. With limited access to veterinary services in the Robbins area, the event, held on Horner Street, was an overwhelming success. Horner Street and the surrounding area was filled with parked cars. Pets and their owners waited patiently. Some families sat on the pine straw with their pets, quietly chatting in the sunshine. The event was scheduled from noon to 2:30pm. Over 90 pets were seen during this time and the team actually had to send out for more rabies vaccinations. Pet owners were able to discuss their pets’ health concerns with the veterinarian and veterinary technicians. They were also able to talk with PRC representatives about the availability of spay and neuter services and sign up for a future transport from the Robbins area. As each pet owner left the event, they were given pet food and additional information. The children received coloring books about staying safe around pets. The discounted rabies shots and the flea and tick medications were made possible by a grant from Walmart to The Pet Responsibility Committee (PRC). West Southern Pines Pet Care Day, March 20, 2021
The PRC built on the experience gained at last year’s event and expanded the services offered at an event held on March 20th in the West Southern Pines neighborhood. At this event, as at the prior one, the PRC subsidized rabies vaccinations and teamed with a veterinarian who offered complete physical exams and additional vaccinations at a reduced cost. Additionally, at this event, for each pet that was examined, the PRC donated a topical application of flea and tick medication to last one month. The veterinary technicians showed the pet owners the correct way to apply the medication. Dr Janice Baker and her team from the Veterinary Tactical Group (VTG), a mobile veterinary practice out of Vass, again enthusiastically teamed with the PRC for the event. Participants were able to discuss their concerns with the veterinarian and were also able to talk with PRC volunteers about the availability of spay and neuter services. Pet food was also distributed. With our continual focus on prevention, these Pet Care Day events are a natural evolution for the PRC. We give pet owners the information and access to resources they need to be responsible pet owners. For the most part, people want to do the right thing but often need advice and sometimes help to get it done.

West Southern Pines Pet Care Day, December 5, 2020
In December, the Southern Pines Pet Care Team, lead by Barb Ross, built on the experience gained at the Robbins’ event held in November and included a veterinarian at a West Southern Pines event. The event was held in the parking lot of the Southern Pines Primary School. The PRC subsidized rabies vaccinations and the veterinarian offered complete physical exams and additional vaccinations at a reduced cost. Dr Janice Baker and veterinary technician, Trinity Maurer, from the Veterinary Tactical Group (VTG), a mobile veterinary practice out of Vass, enthusiastically teamed with the PRC for the event. Participants were able to discuss their concerns with the veterinarian and were also able to talk with PRC volunteers about the availability of spay and neuter services. Pet food was also distributed. With our continual focus on prevention, these Pet Care Day events are a natural evolution for the PRC. We give pet owners the information and access to resources they need to be responsible pet owners. For the most part, people want to do the right thing but often need advice and sometimes help to get it done.
